The Sydney Marathon has commissioned a special piece of artwork designed to celebrate the coming together of the worlds best age groupers at the AbbottWMM Marathon Tours & Travel Age Group World Championships.
Conceived by Australian artist Ambrose Killian, the design represents Country, diversity, movement and community. In the centre, a large community circle has been drawn to represent the Sydney Marathon participants, organisers, volunteers and the extended community involved in the event.
It attempts to symbolize the coming together of multiple communities and backgrounds to participate and the event’s ability to bring people together.
The centre piece also acknowledges the Harbor and the beautiful salt water country of Eora Nation.
The four community circles positioned on each corner of the artwork also represent the traditional Nations and clans that marathon participants run on during the event.
The artwork acknowledges Cammerygal, Wangal, Gadigal and Bidjigal people and their custodianship, care and connection to the lands visited during the marathon journey.
Each group of people is connected through the footprints, symbolizing journey and travelling, for many across oceans, to participate.
Through the background, diverse array of landscapes and waterholes are depicted to further represent the many varying terrains, creeks, hills and lookouts of Sydney.
