Hassan set for Sydney debut

Superstar Sifan Hassan has confirmed she will run in the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS.

The Dutch athlete, who was the Abbott World Marathon Majors Champion in 2023, will line up on the start line on August 31 when Sydney becomes the seventh city to host a Major.

The 32-year-old will be hoping to win her third Major having won London and Chicago during her championship winning year.

In an astonishing marathon debut in London, Hassan seemed out of the race when she stopped to stretch on the 19km mark before eventually dropping 28 seconds behind the leaders.

However, she mounted a stunning recovery to somehow win a sprint finish in the shadows of Buckingham Palace.

Hassan ran even quicker six months later in Chicago, this time 2.13.44 - a course record and second-fastest time ever – to claim her second Major win that year.

Hassan’s domination over the distance continued the following year when she won a thrilling Olympic Marathon in Paris. It was her third Olympic gold having won the 5,000m and 10,000m in Tokyo three years before.

"Running has given me so much, not just as an athlete, but as a person. It has been a way to connect with people," said Hassan.

"To tell my story, and to show that no matter where you come from, you can achieve something meaningful.

"I'm honoured to bring that message to Sydney and to be part of an event that celebrates strength, community and possibility."
