CAREER NOTES:

Japan won only one medal at the Berlin World Championships, but it came in one of that country's signature events – the women's marathon.

Yoshimi Ozaki had the fastest personal best among the team members from her victory at the 2008 Tokyo International Marathon. Her form was questionable after some injury problems in the spring, but on race day she was at full strength, going with the break at 30 kilometers. The gold medal came down to a final sprint against China's Bai Xue, who would prevail by ten seconds.

Ozaki's World Championships silver was the first since Mizuki Noguchi also won silver in 2003. It should be noted that her coach, Sachiko Yamashita, won the silver medal in the men's race at the 1991 World Championships.

After a solid debut of 2:26:19 at Nagoya in March, 2008, Ozaki went on to win the final edition of the Tokyo International Ladies Marathon in November in 2:23:30.

She placed fifth at the 2013 Tokyo Marathon, its first year as an official WMM event.

Ozaki has a half-marathon personal best of 1:09:26 when she was 13th at the 2007 World Championships in Udine. She has also run 31:47.23 for 10,000 meters.
