CAREER NOTES:
Abderrahim Bouramdane was involved in one of the more bizarre marathon circumstances of 2006. He and countryman Zaid Laaroussi were in the lead at the ING Ottawa Marathon when the trailing pack made an inadvertent 400m shortcut and got ahead of the Moroccan duo. Bouramdane eventually caught up but then fell back in the final stages of the race. He was the third to cross the finish line, but as the first to actually run the full 42.195 km distance, declared the winner.
A very consistent competitor, Bouramdane has placed in the top five in twelve of his marathons. He has won races in Tunisia and Morocco and took home the bronze medal at the 2005 Francophone Games in Niamey, Nigeria. In November 2007 he broke through both the 2:10 and 2:09 barriers with a second place 2:08:20 in Seoul, South Korea.
At Boston in 2008 he stuck with eventual winner Robert Cheruiyot longer than anyone else and placed second in 2:09:04. After a disappointing 26th place at the Beijing Olympics, Bouramdane bounced back with a fifth place at New York City, a placing that he repeated in 2009.
His fastest marathon to date then came at the 2010 Virgin London Marathon as he ran 2:07:33, good for fourth place.
Bouramdane has run 1:02:45 for the half-marathon when he won the 2006 Moroccan National title.
PERSONAL NOTES:
Bouramdane began running in 1993 and was inspired by Abdessalem Rhadi, the Moroccan who won the marathon silver medal at the 1960 Olympics. His hometown is Fes and he enjoys playing soccer.
