CAREER NOTES:
Stephen Kiprotich became Uganda's first gold medalist - and medalist of any kind - in the Olympic Marathon, with his surprise victory at London in 2012. Running with Kenyan's Abel Kirui and Wilson Kiplagat in the late stages of the race, he inserted a strong 4:42 mile with less than 5 km to go to claim an upset victory. Kiprotich ended a record string of eight consecutive World Marathon Majors by Kenyan men.
Kiprotich won his first marathon at Enschede in April 2011 in 2:07:20 (his PR) to earn a trip to the Daegu World Championships where he came in ninth. He was under 2:08 again in February of 2012 finishing third at Tokyo.
He has also had top ten places at the World Cross-Country Championships (6th, 2011) and World Junior Championships, 10,000 meters (5th, 2008).
His other personal bests include 27:58.03 for 10,000 meters and 1:03:22 for the half-marathon.
