CAREER NOTES:

At the 2011 ING New York City Marathon, Buzunesh Deba made a spirited bid to become the first New York City resident to win the race.

She fell four seconds short - the second closest margin in race history - to her countrywoman Firehiwot Dado.

Among her eleven career marathons, New York City is the only race she has not won. Earlier in 2011 she took the 'southern California double - with victories at both Los Angeles and Rock 'n' Roll San Diego. Her 2:23:31 at the latter race was the fastest time ever run in California.
