CAREER NOTES:

Although he was coming off a string of wins on the 2010 US Road Racing Circuit, Gebre Gerbemariam's victory at the ING New York City Marathon was still something of a surprise.

Gebrmariam had won the Healthy Kidney 10-K, Beach to Beacon 10-K, Peachtree Road Race 10-K and Falmouth Road Race 10-K. In addition he ran to 1:00:25 second place at the Rock n' Roll Half-Marathon in Philadelphia.

Since he was the 2009 IAAF World Cross-Country Champion that probably helped him break away from Kenyan Emmanuel Mutai in the final miles in Central Park. His 2:08:14 winning time made him the third man after Alberto Salazar (1980) and Rod Dixon (1983) to claim a victory in New York City in his first 26.2 miler.

Although nearly two minutes back of the winner at the 2011 Boston Marathon, Gebremariam hung on for a third place finish. He dropped out of the World Championships but came back to run 2:08:00 at New York City, 14 seconds faster than in 2010 although he finished fourth.

PERSONAL NOTES:

Gebremariam grew up on a farm in the Tigray region of Ethiopia and began running in high school. He married world-class woman distance runner Werknesh Kidane in 2006 and they have two sons, Nathaniel and Muse.
