CAREER NOTES:

Shalane Flanagan is a three-time Olympian and holds North and Central American records in the indoor 3,000m and 5,000m and in the outdoor 10,000m. Her 10,000m record was earned during her bronze medal performance at the 2008 Olympics. Both the indoor American records were earned in Boston in 2007 and 2009 respectively.

Flanagan was also runner up in her 2010 marathon debut in New York City, which was also the National Championships. In 2011 she won the bronze medalist at World Cross Country and lead the U.S. to the team bronze.

Last year she won the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in an event record 2:25:38 and finished tenth at the London Olympic Marathon. Her best half marathon (68:37) was recorded in Philadelphia in 2010.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina with a degree in history, Flanagan won national cross country titles in 2002 and 2003 and was the indoor 3,000m champion. As a professional, she has won the following national titles: USA Cross Country (five times), USA Marathon (twice), USA Half Marathon, USA Indoor 3,000m, USA 5K (twice), USA 10,000m (twice), and USA 5,000m (twice).

Flanagan was the Olympic bronze medalist at 10,000 meters in the 2008 Olympics where she set the current American record of 30:22.22. She is also a four-time USA Cross-Country champion.

At the University of North Carolina she won the 2002 NCAA Cross-Country Championships and was the Honda Athlete of the Year.

PERSONAL NOTES:

Shalane's parens were both top-class American marathoners. Her father, Steve, ran 2:18:39 at the 1979 Fiesta Bowl Marathon and with Shalane they hold the father-daughter combined time record. Her mother Cheryl, set a world record of 2:49:40 in 1971.

Flanagan is married to Steve Edwards and currently lives in Portland, Oregon where she runs for the Oregon Track Club.
