CAREER NOTES:

Maria Konovalova made a huge improvement on her only previous marathon when she placed third at the 2010 Bank of America Marathon. She finished just ten seconds out of second place more than 11 minutes then her 2:35:21 at this year's London Marathon.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics Konovalova placed a solid fifth in a speedy 30:35.84 over 10,000 meters. Then last year at the Russian Championships she finished as runner-up, just a few steps behind Liliya Shobukhova in 30:31.03.

This year she focused on the 5000m in the national championships. Konovalova won by a whopping 25 seconds in 14:49.68. Her best time is 14:38.09 from 2008.

Konovalova was born Angarsk. She was known as Maria Pantyukhova before getting married.
