CAREER NOTES:

Jeptoo entered international competition in 2000 racing primarily in Italy on the roads and in cross country meets. Her transition to the marathon was successful. After winning Stockholm in the spring of 2004, she trimmed more than seven minutes off her time to win Milan five months later. She improved her time again with a seventh-place finish at the 2005 World Championships (2:24:22).

She claimed her first international championships medal with a bronze at the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships 20-K with a time of 1:03:47, just 21 seconds off the pre-race world record. Jeptoo then had a dramatic finish at the ING New York City Marathon, getting edged into fourth place by just one second to Catherine Ndereba.

Jeptoo found the weather conditions at the 2007 Boston Marathon tough going, but she held on for fourth place and picked up 10 valuable points in the World Marathon Majors series.

In 2008 she was third and fourth and the Boston and New York City Marathons. After returning to WMM competition in April 2012 where she was sixth, Jeptoo knocked her PR down to 2:22:04 with a narrow one second defeat at the 2012 Chicago Marathon.

Jeptoo then claimed her second Boston triumph running 2:26:25 at the 2013 race, winning by 33 seconds.

PERSONAL NOTES:

Rita Sitienei Jeptoo was inspired by the great Kenyan marathoner Tegla Loroupe. She continues to spend a lot of time Italy because of her interest in fashion and her hobbies include knitting clothes for husband Noah Busienei, a 1500 meters runner with the Kenyan Armed Forces.
