CAREER NOTES:
The Las Vegas Marathon in December 2007 featured a "Megabucks Challenge" wherein a group of women were given an 18 minute head start over the men and the first across the finish line would get a $25,000 bonus. Silvia Skvortsova didn't need anywhere near that much as her 2:29:01 was more than enough to see her finish way ahead of the first man (2:16:49).
Skvortsova was also involved in one of the most dramatic marathon finishes ever. At the 2003 Motorola Austin Marathon it took a photo to determine the final results and a close examination revealed that Skvortsova had won in 2:37:22.35 over Larisa Timkina, 2:37:22.70.
At the Flora London Marathon in 2002, Skvortsova had run a PR of 2:27:07. Fifteen marathons later that was still her best time until the morning of September 20, 2009. Then less than two months from her 35th birthday, Skvortsova had the marathon time of her life charging to a 2:26:24 second place.
She had raced very sparing in 2009, but a 1:10:31 victory at the Russian Half-Marathon Championships in September gave a preview of what was to come.
