KARRIERE-ANMERKUNGEN:
In his marathon debut and first trip outside of Kenya, a young Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot surprised even himself in Frankfurt as he edged away from Stephen Kiogora and Wilson Kigen just after 35K to win and improve the course record by over half a minute. Lacking a world-class résumé, he purchased his own airline ticket to get to the race and had to run sub-2:14 to get reimbursed.
Six weeks prior to his fifth place at the 2009 Boston Marathon, Cheruiyot was also fifth at the Alphen aan den Rijn 20km (59:36).
Cheruiyot returned to Frankfurt in October 2009, and although finishing nine seconds in arrears to Gilbert Kirwa, he slashed almost a full minute off his personal best.
At Boston in 2010, Cheruiyot ran a stunning course record, completely by-passing 2:06 (the previous record was 2:07:14) to reach the finish line in 2:05:52. He became the fourth youngest male winner at Boston in posting the No. 4 time on American soil.
PERSÖNLICHES BESTES:
Born in Bomet, Cheruiyot is not related to Robert Kipkoech Cheruiyot or Evans Cheruiyot. His instructor is former marathon standout William Kiplagat who has welcomed Cheruiyot into his home and has coached the athlete for three years. One of his training partners is Vincent Kipruto, a two-time 2:05 marathoner.
